Moby Sells His Entire Record Collection to Help Animals

The pioneer of trance music—who recently announced his retirement from the industry to focus on animal rights—is selling his personal collection of rare ‘80s and ‘90s vinyl to benefit plant-based medical group Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

Today, trance-music pioneer and longtime vegan activist Richard Melville Hall (known professionally as “Moby”) will put up for sale his entire collection of records through digital marketplace Reverb LP Shop. The collection includes records in multiple music genres, with rare finds from the ‘80s and ‘90s that Moby played during his multi-decade career as a DJ, and some featuring handwritten notes by the musician. “These are all the records that I bought and loved and played and carried all around the world,” Moby said in video promoting the sale. “I would rather you have them than me, because if you have them, you’ll play them. You’ll love them. And the money will go to the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM). So everybody wins. Well, except me, because now I don’t have any records.” In April, Moby sold 100 of his musical instruments and DJ equipment on Reverb.com and also donated all proceeds to PCRM—a group of medical professionals advocate for plant-based living. In May, the musician—who also owns Los Angeles vegan restaurant Little Pine—announced his retirement from touring to focus on other endeavors, including continuing his efforts to fight for animal rights. In addition to supporting animal-rights causes in a number of other ways, in 2016, Moby partnered with No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal to launch Los Angeles’ first vegan music festival, Circle V. Every year, Moby donates all profits from the festival—which will take place on September 22, with performers to be announced soon—to animal-rights organization Mercy For Animals.
