Shake Shack Tests Vegan-Friendly Burger
The popular burger chain moves away from its only meatless option—a cheese-laden portabello burger—with the new Veggie Shack, a bean-based creation that can be ordered vegan upon request.
Starting April 19, select New York City locations of Shake Shack will offer the Veggie Shack, the chain’s first vegan-friendly burger. The Veggie Shack, Fast Company reports, will be made with a black bean-, rice-, and beet-based patty served with provolone cheese, lettuce, onions, pickles, and a vegan mustard mayonnaise, making it easy to order vegan by removing cheese. Shake Shack’s only meatless entrée option to date has been a portabello mushroom-based burger that could not be ordered without dairy. Shake Shack’s new menu item follows last week’s addition of the Impossible Slider—a miniature burger made with an Impossible Burger patty that can be ordered vegan by removing the cheese—to the menu at 140 White Castle locations.
