Spanish Company Invents Diet Avocado

Isla Bonita's Aguacate Light promises to be 30 percent lower in fat than other varieties.

Spanish brand Isla Bonita announced the discovery of Aguacate (“Avocado”) Light this month. The company analyzed the nutritional content of avocados grown in 32 countries and found the “light” variety in certain tropical areas near the equator, including Ecuador and other parts of South and Central America. According to Ramón Rey, director of international marketing at Isla Bonita, the Aguacate Light has a juicer pulp, milder flavor, and a slower rate of oxidation. “Avocado consumption has recorded an exponential growth in recent years because of its 'superfood' status,” Rey said, “so its caloric value does not, in global terms, constitute a barrier to consuming this fruit, since in return it offers other great benefits.” The avocado variety will be available year-round exclusively in Spain—which might be a good thing as the incidences of medical condition “avocado hand” are on the rise in other parts of the world.
