Finless Foods Aims to Make Slaughter-Free Fish

New "clean meat" company will grow fish filets to combat ocean destruction.

Early-stage startup Finless Foods is developing slaughter-free fish filets using established bioengineering and cell-culturing methods. The company will use a small amount of fish cells to produce “clean meat”—also referred to as “cultured meat”—in a lab setting. “Our objective is to create seafood sustainably using scientific cellular agriculture technologies,” the company’s website states, “which will provide a cost-effective and appetizing alternative to conventionally-caught and commercially-farmed seafood.” While Finless Foods is the first company to solely focus on fish, the concept of producing animals outside of traditional methods of animal agriculture has advanced greatly this year. Silicon Valley startup Memphis Meats has successfully created slaughter-free meatballs, chicken, and duck and plans to debut their first commercial products by 2021.
