Trump Lifts Ban on Elephant-Trophy Hunting

Trophy hunters may now kill the endangered animals in Zambia and Zimbabwe, a move that has created widespread anger among animal-rights groups.

The United States Fish and Wildlife Service (FSW) announced last week a lift on a previous ban of killing elephants for trophies in Zambia and dictator-run Zimbabwe—the country where Cecil the lion was shot two years ago by dentist Walter Palmer. In 2014, the Obama administration implemented a ban on hunting elephants for trophies in those countries in an effort to protect the endangered animals. The repeal—which the Trump administration says was enacted to promote conservation efforts—is receiving widespread backlash from animal-rights organizations, including The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). “Let’s be clear,” HSUS CEO Wayne Pacelle said, “elephants are on the list of threatened species. The global community has rallied to stem the ivory trade, and now, the US government is giving American trophy hunters the green light to kill them.” The Trump administration has routinely reversed legislation implemented by its predecessor including withdrawing from The Paris Agreement—making the US the only country to abstain from the global effort to reduce climate change. FSW has yet to formally publish the ban reversal in the Federal Register, and concerned individuals are urged to call their local political representatives to voice their opposition.
