Google Ditches Egg to Make Salad Emoji Vegan-Friendly

The head designer behind the new eggless salad emoji aims to be more inclusive of vegan Android users.

This week, Google released a set of 157 Android P beta 2 emojis that includes re-designed options with the aim of inclusivity. While the salad emoji previously contained a hard-boiled egg, the new version was created sans depictions of animal products to appeal to vegans. “There’s big talk about inclusion and diversity at Google,” Google emoji head of design Jennifer Daniel tweeted. “So if you need any evidence of Google is making this priority may I direct your attention to the emoji—we’ve removed the egg in Android P beta 2, making this a more inclusive vegan salad.” Some of the other re-designed emojis include more inclusive families that feature same-sex parents and superheros that can be represented in five skin tones.
