Popular Tofu Company Ends Animal Testing

House Foods Group will no longer force-feed and inject mice with chemicals to make health claims.

House Foods Group recently pledged to end testing its products on animals. The ban comes after animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) found that House Foods Group was conducting cruel experiments on mice to be able to make health claims about its products. Experiments included force-feeding mice so that they became obese, harvesting their livers and blood, and injecting them with a chemical to induce Parkinson’s disease-like symptoms. “After learning from PETA that experiments on animals are cruel, not required by law, and irrelevant to humans, House Foods executives quickly agreed to ban these archaic studies," PETA scientist Frances Cheng said. "PETA applauds the tofu company for embracing modern, animal-free research tools.” Food companies, and the medical industry alike, are moving toward more relevant human models. Last year, the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga became the last medical school in North America to require its students to practice surgery on live animals such as pigs, cats, and dogs.
