Reality TV Star Lisa Vanderpump Fights Yulin Dog Festival

Real Housewives’ star takes on Capitol Hill in hopes of saving the lives of a reported 10,000 dogs.

Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star and animal advocate Lisa Vanderpump went to Capitol Hill last week to speak out against the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China. The 56-year-old restaurateur and reality television mainstay lobbied with the Humane Society International, Florida Congressman Alcee Hasting, and other activist groups September 14 at the US Capitol to discuss the dog meat trade in Asia, the Yulin Dog Meat Festival in China, and “how we plan to make an impact with the House Resolution 752.” If passed, the resolution would officially condemn the controversial festival which, it states, contributes to the 10 millions dogs captured and slaughtered in the dog meat market. “It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican or Democrat—our cause should be everyone’s cause,” said Vanderpump, with her own Pomeranian companion Gigolo in tow. “It’s with the weight of the American government behind us that we can finally begin to make real change.” While her multiple Los Angeles restaurants and bars serve meat, dairy, and eggs, Vanderpump has made a name for herself advocating for LGBTQ and animal rights, and last year founded The Vanderpump Dog Foundation that aims to “provide for a more humane world for dogs worldwide … through global legislation, rescue, and education.”
