Netflix Creates Veg-Themed Clip to Promote Okja

A new promotional video highlighting the negative effects of eating meat was inspired by the underlying animal-rights theme of the hit movie.

Netflix recently launched a promotional video for its newly streaming film Okja. The clip depicted a woman carelessly shopping for meat at a grocery store before watching Okja followed by the same woman crying on the floor in the meat department after she had viewed the animal-rights themed film. Okja explores the horrors of factory farming through a storyline in which villain Lucy Mirando (played by Tilda Swinton) orders six “super-pigs” to be raised in various parts of the world, which eventually will be slaughtered for consumption. One such pig (named Okja) is raised in South Korea by Mija (played by Korean actress Seo-Hyun Ahn) and becomes the loveable subject of the film. Okja has created a stir, particularly on Twitter, with many of its viewers expressing a change of heart about consuming meat. According to media outlet Korea Exposé, the film has initiated a national conversation among South Korean viewers, who have taken to social media to express their remorse—with some vowing to go vegetarian—for consuming animals similar to the title character.
