Plant-Based Cuisine Named Top Trend in New Zealand
A group of 2,000 restaurant professionals in New Zealand say vegan foods are becoming the norm and predict the trend will drive local restaurant menus in 2018.
The New Zealand Restaurant Association recently polled 2,000 of its members about the biggest dietary trends in the country. A majority of the members, 64 percent, believed that demand for plant-based, sustainable, and locally sourced cuisine will increase in 2018, while 28 percent revealed that vegan menu options will increase to fulfill demand. “Health, plant-based, sustainable, and allergen-friendly are some of the trends that our own members have predicted and [are] consistent with what has been forecast and reported globally,” Restaurant Association CEO Marisa Bidois told local media outlet New Zealand Herald. "Gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan diets are now amongst the norm, as well as gut-friendly meal-planning that includes processes such as fermenting, pickling, and preserving.” In March, Domino’s New Zealand polled its social-media fans about whether they would like vegan cheese added to the menu—a tactic used by Domino’s Australia earlier this year, which resulted in the permanent addition of Follow Your Heart’s vegan cheese to Domino’s menus across the continent in January.
