United Kingdom-based pub chain Bierkeller Entertainment Complexes recently added a smoked vegan Bavarian-style sausage to the menu at its six locations. The eatery and venue space—which specializes in authentic German sausages and beer—sourced the new seitan-based vegan sausage from the company’s German supplier to ensure quality. “A lot more people are vegan or vegetarian now, either through choice or health reasons,” company menu developer Adam Van Hecke said, “so we felt we needed to cater for what was an increasing crowd. Bierkeller is so well-known for its sausages, so that’s why it was important to have this wider selection and really show it off.” Since the World Health Organization reclassified processed meat in the same cancer-causing category as cigarettes in 2015, UK residents have increasingly preferred plant-based meats to animal products—resulting in a £327.8 million ($405.4 million) reduction in meat sales in the region.
