Two vegan politicians—both representing the Humane Party—will run for Congress during the 2018 congressional elections. Texas-based Robert Mason is a candidate for the 3rd District seat in the United States House of Representatives and will run on a platform that addresses issues such as climate change, immigration, and healthcare, while California-based Clifton Roberts is a United States Senate candidate whose platform fosters a better education system, protecting natural resources from further contamination, and obtaining equality for all human and animal beings. Both Roberts and Mason have taken oaths to represent vegan values in word, deed, and actions in their prospective positions in Congress. Roberts explained his vegan-centric political values to VegNews, by quoting Mahatma Gandhi: “First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, and then you win.” Roberts and Mason believe that the time for political change has come and intend to push transformative policies through their positions in federal office. “We’ve been ridiculed for years,” Roberts said. “We’ve been attacked for speaking truth to power. Now, it’s time we win and replace those in Congress with women and men of ethics and compassion.” In 2015, Roberts was the first US presidential candidate on the ballot to represent the Humane Party.
