New plant-based eatery The Vegan Doughnut Company is scheduled to open in early 2018 in Lakewood, OH. The shop is owned by sister duo Kharisma and Kyra Mayo, who started the company this spring as a pop-up inside an ice cream shop. “We had lines down the street,” Kyra Mayo told local media outlet Cleveland.com. “I really didn’t expect that. But when you get that big of a response, it’s obvious you need a permanent home.” The shop’s menu consists of yeast-raised doughnuts dipped in a variety of frostings—such as cherry, strawberry, and hibiscus—and toppings such as sprinkles, vegan marshmallows, lavender, and coconut bacon. The sisters—who adopted a vegan lifestyle in 2014—plan to introduce more vegan treats once the eatery officially opens. “Before we went vegan,” Kharisma said, “we loved anything sweet. We want to make everything we haven’t been able to find—vegan versions of all of our favorite things.”
