Vegan chef/actress Angela Means Kaaya—who is best known for her role as “Felishia” in classic film Friday and the subsequent phrase “Bye, Felicia” [sic] sparked by the film—plans to re-open Jackfruit Cafe this summer. Kaaya first opened the concept (which, she describes as “an elevated vegan Chipotle”) last year inside of King’s Donuts in the Crenshaw neighborhood of Los Angeles. According to media outlet Eater, the owners of King’s Donuts asked Kaaya to relocate as her vegan food—which includes jackfruit-based dishes such as wraps and soul-food platters—was drawing so many customers that the space could no longer accommodate them. Kaaya will temporarily operate Jackfruit Cafe in a shuttered location of juice shop Rawkin Juice in Santa Monica, CA. After her stint in Santa Monica, Kaaya—who is also the mother of Detroit Lions quarterback Brad Kaaya, Jr.—plans to open a permanent Jackfruit Cafe location in either Leimert Park or Jefferson Park.
