Organization Sues FDA Over Animal Antibiotics

A conservationist group is taking legal action due to the agency’s failure to give it access to crucial documents.

This week, conservationist group the National Resources Defense Council filed a lawsuit against the Food and Drug Administration for withholding documents that analyze the adverse health effects of using antibiotics in animal feed. The organization says it attempted to obtain the documents by filing a Freedom of Information Act request, to which the government agency “failed to respond in a timely fashion.” Earlier this month, a federal judged ruled that the FDA must reconsider its earlier rejection of petitions urging the agency to ban the use of certain antibiotics on farms—a ruling the National Resources Defense Council called “another hugely important victory.”
