Consuming Legumes Aids in Diabetes Management

A new study found that consumption of chickpeas and lentils helps those managing diabetes.

In a recent study published in the Archives of Internal Medicines, the consumption of chickpeas and lentils was revealed as one way to regulate diabetes symptoms and lower risk of developing heart disease. The study involved 121 patients with type 2 diabetes in Toronto, ON, and roughly half were encouraged to incorporate legumes into their diet, and the other half, whole-wheat products. Three months later, the group that added legumes into their daily diet showed a slightly larger reduction of hemoglobin A1c (average blood sugar) than their counterparts. Additionally, the legume-eaters showed a larger reduction of body weight. While legume farmers financed the study in part, whole foods and vegetables have been seen to increase overall wellness in many other studies.
