Veganism is on the Rise for Companion Animals

In response to the growing vegan trend in Toronto, one veterinarian says dogs can also benefit from a plant-based diet.

While many dog-lovers question if their furry friends can thrive on a plant-based diet, veterinarian Erika Sullivan says dogs “are natural omnivores who have the enzymes to break down the nutrients from a vegan diet and assimilate them for daily use,” reports The Canadian Press. In Toronto, veganism is not just a growing trend in humans, but for their companion animals, too. Longtime vegan Ken Butland told The Canadian Press about his two adopted dachshunds who suffered from medical ailments, including hair loss and malnutrition, and were put on a meat-free diet at Dr. Sullivan’s suggestion. Dr. Sullivan credits their newfound health to veganism, and questions the safety of ingredients in traditional pet food.
