An undercover investigation on the Canadian pork supplier Puratone incited a torrent of public dissent after concerned consumers saw footage of workers slamming piglets against the floor as a means of euthanasia and pregnant pigs being confined to small pens known as gestation crates. The investigation, which was conducted by Mercy For Animals last year, prompted eight major Canadian retailers including Safeway, Walmart, Costco, and Sobeys to phase out gestation crates within the next nine years. Investigations at US Walmart pork suppliers have revealed similar living conditions for animals, but the American branch has not agreed to stop the use of gestation crates.
