New Jersey Legislature Passes Gestation Crate Ban

The New Jersey Legislature passed a statute that will prohibit the use of gestation crates and force farms to give pigs enough room in their confined areas to stand up, turn around, and move their limbs. The State Assembly passed the measure with a 60 to 5 vote and the Senate followed suit with a 29 to 4 vote. Garden State Governor Chris Christie needs to sign the bill for the law to be enacted, and according to a survey conducted by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research, his signature has the support of his constituents: 89 percent of New Jersey residents want to see the bill approved. “This decision from New Jersey’s legislature is further evidence that these cruel systems have no future,” says senior director for strategic initiatives at Farm Sanctuary Bruce Friedrich. “Cramming animals into crates so small that they can’t even turn around is horribly abusive. These systems have no place in a just society.”
