Vegetarian Dining Hall to Open at South Carolina College

The College of Charleston will cater to vegan, vegetarian, and kosher diets.

In an effort to create an all-inclusive public community space, South Carolina’s College of Charleston is opening a vegan, vegetarian, and kosher dining hall this winter. Director of Jewish Studies Marty Perlmutter wants the dining hall to be “a place for people to eat together, and with it a menu that is both environmentally and ecologically sensitive.” Furthermore, Perlmutter—in whose honor the hall will be named­— hopes the facility “will create a diverse learning community of the best sort, one that is both generationally integrated, sensitive to the dietary needs of Jews, Muslims, Hindus, and vegetarians and vegans, and tuned into the realities of the new world.” In 2012, Jonathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals was chosen for the school’s College Reads Program, which is credited as helping to start the conversation about ethical eating on campus.
