Actress Nikki Reed and designer Morgan Bogle have collaborated on a six-piece “sustainable and cruelty-free luxury bag line” for New York-based designer handbag company, Freedom of Animals. All the bags are made in the US and follow firm ethical standards such as using post-consumer polyurethane, organic cotton, and recycled metal zippers. Production adheres to strict US Environmental Protection Agency guidelines, while the finishing process uses 70 percent less energy than other synthetic counterparts. “My goal wasn’t about anything other than creating really practical pieces,” Reed said. By partnering with Kenya’s Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, Freedom of Animals has named most bags after orphaned elephants who lost their mothers to poaching and were brought to the foundation. The business also has a cruelty-free version of the controversial Birkin bag and donates 20 percent of each sale to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which certifies all the bags on the site as vegan.
