During a recent interview on Austin, Texas morning news program Good Day Austin, the four authors behind the all-vegan, all taco-related cookbook The Taco Cleanse appeared to have stumped reporter Amanda Salinas. The host took a quiz to determine her “taco personality,” but when answering a multiple-choice question about her preferred taco order at a new restaurant, Salinas let out an audible “ugh” before the word “soyrizo.” Salinas then hurried through the rest of the list, replacing “seitan” in the next item with “etc., etc.” and stated that “falafel in a pizza is not a taco.” After the debacle, the host asked the group how tacos are related to detoxing and cleansing, to which co-author Stephanie Bogdanich responded by saying that the book is “more of a cleanse for your mind.” While this on-air flop is fun to watch, this segment—and the book’s recent coverage by Los Angeles Times, Cosmopolitan, Eater, and the enthusiastic approval from actress Jennifer Aniston—is also evidence that comedic approaches to veganism are gaining widespread media recognition.
