Vegetarian Options Top Sellers at LA Mexican Restaurant

Although poached eggs and carnitas fat are on the menu, owner Ray Garcia says his vegetarian options outsell everything else.

Los Angeles restaurant Broken Spanish was recently featured on food website Munchies for its “authentically inauthentic” take on Mexican cuisine. While highlighting menu items such as panna cotta with foie gras butter, lamb’s head with pickled onions, and tortillas with whipped carnitas fat, owner Ray Garcia explained that his eatery’s vegetarian and vegan options outsell his meat-based counterparts. For vegans, the restaurant removes the carnitas fat found in the tortillas and replaces them with refried lentils, which “strike a happy balance for our guests,” Garcia said. “The reality is (that) we have six vegan items on the menu (and) eight vegetarian items,” Garcia said. “Our biggest sellers are vegetarian.” Other vegan options include chochoyotes (masa dumpling with potato, green garlic, and pasilla), a tostada (with pea salsa verde), and a mushroom platter.
