Georgian Vegan Café Gets Global Support After Meat Attack

Tbilisi-based eatery Kiwi Café receives hundreds of positive messages after Sunday's attack by extremists.

Kiwi Café in Tbilisi, Georgia was attacked Sunday by more than a dozen extreme nationalists who brought meat into the vegan eatery, threw it at customers, and proceeded to smoke indoors. The incident resulted in a street fight wherein locals expressed their anger toward the establishment and its patrons. Café owners revealed that this “fascist” group, along with neighbors, have been apprehensive toward the vegan eatery, citing “the way we look, music that we listen to, ideas we support, and the fact that we don't eat meat” as motives behind the attack. The café asked its Facebook followers for support by visiting them and received hundreds of messages of compassion from around the world. Despite Sunday’s harrowing events, the café is keeping its doors open and stated that they are “ready to accept all customers regardless of nationality, race, appearance, age, gender, sexual orientation, religious views, etc. Equality is the most important thing for us. Animal liberation! Human liberation!”
