Beeswax in Baileys: "I Sincerely Apologize for the Confusion"

After debuting its new dairy-free Irish cream in May, company discovers that the product is not vegan.

In May, Baileys released the dairy- and gluten-free almond milk-based Almande, which instantly received worldwide attention from media and the vegan community overjoyed about the alternative to traditional Irish cream. While the company had no intent to create a vegan beverage, the frenzy of media and consumer reactions prompted Baileys to investigate whether their formulation was completely vegan. Unfortunately, the beverage was found to contain beeswax, but the company says it is now working dilligently to remove the animal product from the formulation. Initially, the brand planned to launch Almande in Dallas, Austin, and Denver, but given vegan consumer interest, Baileys intends to launch Almande nationally as a purely vegan product as soon as it's been reformulated. “I sincerely apologize for the confusion,” Baileys representative Dominic Benigno told VegNews today. “We respect vegans and veganism, want to be fully transparent, and offer Irish cream that everyone can enjoy.” Bengino assured VN that Baileys is actively reformulating Almande to serve its new (and unexpected) vegan fan base as quickly as possible.
