Danone, the Paris-based multi-national parent company of Dannon yogurt, announced on Wednesday that it struck a deal with WhiteWave Foods to buy the vegan-friendly company for $12.5 billion. Distributor of vegan brands such as Silk, So Delicious, Vega, and Alpro, WhiteWave has enjoyed massive income gains since acquiring the plant-based businesses—to the tune of $1 billion reported last November—and will be a part of the Danone family by the end of the year upon the approval of shareholders. “Today’s announcement is an exciting next chapter for WhiteWave, bringing together two leading companies with a shared mission of changing the way the world eats for the better,” CEO Gregg Engles said. “Danone is a great cultural fit for our organization, and I am excited for our employees to benefit from the opportunities presented by joining Danone, a leading global food company and the ideal strategic partner to support our future.” Engles cited extended financial, geographic, and operational resource opportunities for the move to join Danone.
