Publix Finally Commits to Going Cage-Free

Third-largest supermarket joins companies such as Walmart, McDonald's, and Panera Bread to sell only cage-free eggs.

Publix—the country’s third largest supermarket chain—recently announced it would commit to selling only cage-free eggs at its 1,100 stores by 2026. Animal-rights organizations Mercy For Animals (MFA) and The Humane Society of the United States collaborated on an intensive campaign to convince the market to make the commitment, which according to MFA will enrich the lives of more than 15 million egg-laying hens. Publix is one of 25 US and Canadian grocery retailers—including Walmart—who have made the commitment to go cage-free, with Midwestern chain Hy-Vee as the only remaining abstainer. “It is clear that the blatantly cruel practice of caging hens is on the road to oblivion,” MFA campaign coordinator Brian Alexander said.
