Activist Arrested for Photographing Overturned Pig Truck

A truck carrying approximately 160 pigs overturned en route to Ontario, Canada slaughterhouse Fearmans Pork. The accident severely injured most of the animals, killing an estimated total of 60 individuals who were left on the underturned truck. The 100 surviving pigs were marched to the slaughterhouse on foot. Activist Anita Krajnc arrived at the scene and took photos of the incident—witnessing workers attempting to force a downed pig with a bleeding leg to walk. Kranjc was arrested for obstructing an officer in her efforts to document the event. “Fearmans office workers in shirts and ties were lined up holding cardboard to hide the injured, dead, and alive pigs,” Kranjc told VegNews. “We asked them to spare the survivors but Fearmans showed no mercy. We are asking the public to show mercy by going vegan and becoming activists.” Kranjc is currently standing trial for participating with activist group Toronto Pig Save, wherein she provided water to thirsty pigs on their way to slaughter. If convicted for “interfering with property,” Kranjc will face up to six months in jail and a $5,000 fine. Testimony for the Kranjc trial resumed this week and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals President Ingrid Newkirk arrived in Ontario to support Kranjc, stating “I can’t imagine that this court would impose some sort of punishment on a woman for reaching out to an individual who was thirsty.”
