London-based vegan fried chicken shop Temple of Seitan held its grand opening this weekend to massive crowds. Despite inclement weather conditions, Londoners stood in lines around the block in order to sample the shop’s seitan-based chicken creations—available in buckets, atop vegan mac n’ cheese, and in sandwiches. The eatery opened on Saturday—next door to a halal butcher shop—and its first customers took to social media to express their satisfaction with their meals, posting pictures of eager customers waiting to be served. “Just had vegan fried chicken from @templeofseitan and it’s the best thing about 2017 so far,” London musician Ayelle posted to Twitter. The shop responded on Instagram with words of gratitude for its fans. “Yesterday was unbelievable,” the shop stated, “There aren’t any words to describe how grateful we are to everyone who came out!” Temple of Seitan first gained public attention last month when it announced its intent to compete with London’s animal-based establishments (such as KFC) as the world’s first all-vegan fried chicken eatery.
