Quirky drama A Ghost Story came out as a favorite amongst critics during this year’s Sundance Film Festival. The film features characters “C” (played by a white sheet-covered Casey Affleck) and “M” (played by Rooney Mara), the grieving partner of C who is killed in a car accident but continues to quietly haunt M. One particularly dramatic scene involves M devouring a pie made by Dallas-based vegan eatery Spiral Diner. While the movie lends itself to a lot of discussion, according to media outlet Vulture, “People mostly just want to talk about the pie.” The scene takes place across two takes and lasts a full five minutes. “Rooney attacks that pie like a cake person,” Vulture writer Kyle Buchanan writes, “engineering such unusual fork scoops (she stabs the pie at least four times before each bite) that I started to wonder whether the actress had even ever seen a pie before.” Spiral Diner & Bakery has been a vegan institution in the Dallas area with two locations (Fort Worth and Denton) and a third slated to open in 2017. After the festival, A Ghost Story has been picked up by distribution company A24 which previously worked with Moonlight, a film currently nominated for eight Oscar awards.
