Actor and director Jordan Peele—of comedy series Key & Peele fame—recently spoke with the Los Angeles Times about box-office hit movie Get Out. Peele directed the movie—a poignant horror film about a relationship between a black man and white woman—that prominently features a disturbing scene which revolves around Rose (the female lead character) drinking milk. In the interview, writer Jen Yamato highlights the new politicization of the dairy product. “Milk, it has been argued of late, is the new symbol of white supremacy in America,” Yamato states, “owing to its hue and the notion that lactose intolerance in certain ethnicities means that milk-absorbing Caucasian genetics are superior.” Yamato showed Peele a YouTube video wherein a white man mocked other ethnicities by drinking milk, stating, “Hey you nonwhites: I can do this and you can’t,” to which the director responded, “there’s something kind of horrific about milk,” adding, “Think about it! Think about what we’re doing. Milk is kind of gross.”
