Long Island's First Vegan Grocery Opens this Summer

New Hyde Park will be home to an all-vegan retailer with hot dogs, baked goods, and pesticide-free local produce.

Long Island’s first all-vegan grocery store, The Market, will open in Williston, NY, later this summer. The grocery is an extension of founder Michael Sabet’s vegan bakery Sweet to Lick—which he operates only three doors down from the upcoming grocery store. “So many of the vegan spots are like, ‘just so cool,’ and I’m maybe just not cool enough to be there,” Sabet said. “But this is my place. It’s exactly as cool as I am, so my family’s welcome, your family’s welcome.” The Market will, in fact, be cool and stocked with fresh, pesticide-free produce from local grower Lifted Roots, plant-based hot dogs, dairy-free butter, packaged foods, and baked goods carried over from Sweet to Lick. Sabet also plans to partner with a vegan dietitian to inspire health-centric plant-based eaters to remain healthy. In Manhattan, Orchard Grocer—which operates next to sister business Moo Shoes—opened in March to serve a variety of plant-based goods and prepared vegan foods to its welcoming Lower East Side community.
