Vegan-Friendly Chef to Headline BBQ Festival
Chef Shannon Martinez’s plant-based chorizo, Spanish meatballs, and cashew cheese are the talk of the otherwise meat-centric event in Australia.

Chef Shannon Martinez—co-owner of vegan eatery Smith & Daughters in Melbourne—will be the featured guest at the Adelaide Beer and BBQ festival in Australia this weekend. While not vegan herself, Martinez (pictured on the left) will prepare the restaurant’s plant-based dishes for the meat-centric annual event. “Many people believe veganism is a trend,” Martinez said, “that all vegan food tastes the same boring way and, above all, that it is uncreative, not filling and lacks flavor. I like to turn that on its head.” For the festival, Martinez will serve vegan chorizo and potato, Spanish meatballs, cashew-based cheese, vegan tuna, and green pea croquettes. The buzz around Martinez’s vegan food at an event traditionally dedicated to meat proves that veganism in Australia is increasing. Last year, a Google Trends report identified “vegan” as the most searched dietary term across the continent in 2016.
