Starting today, Whole Foods Market will slash prices on a number of grocery staples such as organic avocados, Whole Trade bananas, almond butter, and organic Gala and Fuji apples. Amazon announced it would close its $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods Market this week and implement several new initiatives to make the grocery chain more accessible to a wider customer base. “We’re determined to make healthy and organic food affordable for everyone,” Amazon Vice President Jeff Wilke said. Whole Foods CEO—and long-time vegan—John Mackey will stay Whole Foods after the buyout to help integrate the companies. “It’s been our mission for 39 years at Whole Foods Market to bring the highest quality food to our customers,” Mackey said. “We can’t wait to start showing customers what’s possible when Whole Foods Market and Amazon innovate together.” As part of the integration, select Whole Foods will soon feature Amazon lockers where customers can ship their online orders to their local stores for pick-up.
