Animal Rights 2006 Rocked the House
Think about it: a weekend with hundreds of thriving vegetarian advocates. The Animal Rights 2006 Conference held August 10-14 didn't disappoint those hoping for just such an experience, where social networking at its finest and a sharp, enlivened program made for one hell of a seminar. On the foodie side of things, highlights included delicious baked goods from Vegan Treats Bakery, waffle cone scoops of Chicago Non-Dairy Temptation Frozen Dessert, hot icing-drizzled cinnamon buns from Sticky Fingers Bakery, and gooey, delicious grilled chreese sandwiches from Road's End Organics. Farm Animal Reform Movement put on the event, which culminated in a banquet and awards ceremony. Grassroots activist awards inspired by our own publisher Joseph Connelly went to 30+ year AR activist Chaz Chiodro, Kinship Circle founder Brenda Shoss, SHowing Animals Respect and Kindness (SHARK) founder Steve Hindi and Camille Stadts of Win Animal Rights. Moby received the Guardian Award, which he accepted graciously along with the other winners before a night of schmoozing and fun in the warm summer air. Who says activists don't have any fun?
Japanese Tuna Scandal
An investigation has uncovered evidence that Japanese fishers have overreached their quota of Southern Bluefin Tuna by more than $2 billion, depleting the population dramatically. According to the The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, this fastest-swimming fish in the ocean can fetch upwards of $250,000 a head in Japan's fish market.
Chicago Foie Gras Ban Kicks In
Chicago restaurants can no longer legally serve foie gras as of August 22, when the city council's ban comes into effect. Disgruntled chefs have threatened to continue serving the dish or even to file suit against the city, but they face staunch opposition from animal rights and welfare groups. Stopforcefeeding.com cites several ways to involve yourself with the campaign to end this practice, including contacting restaurants, writing a letter to the editor, and passing out brochures.
Its no shocker that Debra Wasserman and Reed Magnels Simply Vegan has sold more than 80,000 copies since it first released in 1991, making it among the most popular cookbooks of its kind. This manual adopts the credence that less is more, with understated yet delicious recipes you can put together with some fresh produce from the farmers market and essentials typical to the everyday vegetarian pantry. Get yourself the newly released 4th Edition for more than 150 recipes and a weighty nutrition section that covers everything but the kitchen sink, from getting your B12 to feeding the little ones.

This recipes for Tofu Dill Dip blend a small amount of ingredients into a surprisingly tasty side dish that you can whip up quickly for a beachside snack or barbeque side dish. This Blog's Got Sass
Blogs can bore if the voice isn't engaging, but get someone with the gift of gab online and you've got yourself a pretty entertaining read. Discover a new internet obsession in the guise of Vegan Chai, a sassy little blog by an ardent vegan who knows how to laugh and make you laugh with her, like when she says of gelatin-free Vermints, "They're similar to altoids, but you know, without the hooves and tendons."
Eat Yer Vitamins
According to our reader survey, more than 70 percent of you take vitamins. Visit vuru.com if you prefer shopping online to schlepping through grocery aisles. Here, you can put together a pack by inserting "vegan" into the search engine for vegetarian capsules. Or, try out their Vegan Veggie Pack, which includes a multivitamin and CoQ10, Vitamin E and Grape Seed Extract for cardiovascular health and antioxidants.
Fast Food for Veggies
Laughing is important. That's why you should watch this skit on YouTube, which we found thanks to the Grumpy Vegan, a UK-based blogger with dry-as-toast humor and insightful posts about the cause.
Last month, we asked, "Whom do you admire most in the veg movement?" Colleen Gray took the prize, a Larenim Mineral Cosmetics basket full of press foundation and powder, brushes and shades. Here's what Colleen wrote:
"Whom I admire most isn't any one person, but my friends. While you won't see us on the cover of a magazine, we do influence the people we know. Whether it is with a calm, rational explanation of our beliefs or an offer of tasty treats that others might not have tried, we have influenced more long-lasting change than would a movie or pop star causing a flash-in-the-pan decision. I never would have thought my brother (who used to call me a Commie) would be drinking soymilk with the vegan cookies I made, but it happened. As the saying goes, a butterfly flapping it wings can be feltin a tremendous wayat the other end of the earth."
