Greetings from the VegNews team! Each month, we publish the popular online newsletter, "VegNewsletter," and we hope you enjoy our special holiday edition. Inside this issue, you'll discover a great recipe for dairy-free soy nog, compassionate gift ideas, delicious seasonal vegan cookies, product reviews of two new gelatin-free marshmallows, the winners of the 2003 VegNews Veggie Awards, and some great holiday specials. During the next four weeks, remember to stay active, eat healthfully (when possible), and support veg businesses for all your gift-giving needs!
In the past few years, a handful of soy and rice
nogs have become available for our dairy-free
drinking pleasure. If your preference is a sweet,
light refreshing nog, try White Wave’s Silk
Nog. Rice Nog, made by Grainaissance, is a richer,
creamier and more filling nog made from rice.
Both are only available a few months a year, so
enjoy them while they last. Alternatively, you
can make your own Soy Nog for holiday guests.
Following is (VegNews Columnist) Chef Beverly
Lynn Bennett’s favorite recipe:
1 quart soy milk
6 ounces Mori-Nu silken style tofu, extra firm
6 tablespoons maple syrup
1/4 cup Amaretto, Southern Comfort, brandy, or
alcohol of choice
2 teaspoons vanilla
1-1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon cardamom
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
In a blender, combine all ingredients and blend
until smooth. Chill before serving. Makes 5 cups.
Several of our favorite vegan cookie companies
will be offering seasonal flavors during the upcoming
holidays. A box or bag of these delicious dairy-free
cookies wrapped with a pretty bow make excellent
gifts for colleagues, a party host, or neighbor.

At last, Vegan Marshmallows! Marshmallows have
been one of those few products that just haven’t
been available sans gelatin... until now. In the
last month, Vegan superstores Pangea and Vegan
Essentials have started selling their own brands
of fluffy, white marshmallows. Perfect atop hot
chocolate, in s’mores, rice krispy treats,
or just straight from the bag, both varieties
taste great, melt, and look and feel like the
conventional product. Vegan Essentials is also
selling Peanut Butter Krispy Rice Treats and will
soon be introducing chocolate-dipped marshmallows.
Pangea plans to sell their brand in selected natural
food stores around the country.
