V in the News

Chinese Cats Saved from Slaughter
Though Western societies have long considered the consumption of cats and dogs unacceptable, awareness of the issue in China is finally gaining momentum. In a rare victory, 100 advocates for the "Love Kitty" organization saved 400 cats from slaughter—cats that we're going to be consumed as food by humans. Read the Gaurdian's full story here.

Michael Pollan Says Less is More
Michael Pollan, author of The Omnivore's Dilemma, has published a lengthy article in the New York Times about how complex the food industry has become with its number of players—from special interest groups to packaged-food producers to the media. Pollan says that eating healthy means sticking to real, whole foods. It seems obvious, but then again, that's kind of his point.

Veggie Awards, UK Style
It seems our mates across the pond have started an awards competition of their own for everyone's favorite—or should we say "favourite"—vegan product, company, online shop, individual, health store, organization and (ahem) publication. Hempologist Tim Barford has launched the 007 Vegan Environmental Awards, and the voting is underway. Check it out here.

Event Spotlight: The Great American Meatout

March will be here in a hop and a skip, and with it the Great American Meatout. On March 20, thousands of people in every state will gather for this event sponsored by the Farm Animal Reform Movement (FARM), which also organizes the legendary Animal Rights conference each year. It's a fun way to spend the day—events are filled with street theater, lectures, public dinners, cooking demos, food samplings, leafleting, and information tables (dubbed "steakouts"). A Congressional reception will convene in DC.

Recipe: Vegan Yum's Aloo Gobi

What You Need:

2 red potatoes, scrubbed and chopped (about 1 pound)
2 to 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
1/4 teaspoon black mustard seeds
1/4 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 tablespoon ginger, freshly grated
1 good pinch hing (asofoetida)
2 tablespoons ground coriander
2 medium tomatoes, peeled and chopped
1 teaspoon turmeric
1 teaspoon salt, plus more to taste
1/4 jalapeno pepper, seeded and split in half vertically
1 large head cauliflower, chopped
Fresh cilantro

What You Do:
1. Boil the potatoes in water for about 5 minutes and drain.
2. Over high heat, heat the oil. Add the mustard seeds, cumin seeds, ginger, hing and coriander. Fry for a few minutes while stirring constantly to prevent scorching.
3. Add the chopped tomatoes. Reduce heat to medium and keep stirring. Break the tomatoes up with a spoon to form a sauce. Add the turmeric, salt and jalapeno.
4. When the tomatoes have slightly disintegrated into the oil and spices, add the drained potatoes and cauliflower. Stir well to coat the vegetables in the spice mixture. Cover and reduce heat if necessary to steam the veggies.
5. When the cauliflower is well cooked and not crunchy, it's done. Season to taste with salt and chopped cilantro.

Product Review: Bake 'Em Yourself Energy Bars

It's such a brilliant idea, we can't believe nobody has thought of it until now! Energy bars are healthy, but there's no denying that pre-packaged taste. So why not make homemade energy bars, complete with all the health benefits? Matisse & Jack's has developed TrailBlaze Bake-At-Home Oatmeal Energy Bars, full of protein, fiber, Omega-3s and healthy fats that have a delicious fresh-baked flavor. And, of course, they have an easy vegan recipe to go with it right on the box. They're offering 25 percent off to VegNewsletter readers, so enter the code VEGNEWS25 to save. Order at least five boxes and receive free shipping—because keeping it natural doesn't have to drain the bank.

Contest Winner: Crazy for the Cause

In our January edition of the VegNewsletter, we posed this question: What's the craziest thing you've ever done for the cause? Wow—you sure have done some crazy stuff to get people hyped on veg. LeShaun James made tortilla wraps for the homeless, Leyla Falcone stickered a butcher shop, and Ashley Anderson took care of geese and duck "vents" at Farm Sanctuary—"and I'm not talking about the holes in their noses," she writes. But the prize goes to fearless Rebecca Goth.

"When driving, I watch people who pull up behind me and read my bumper stickers. One day, two young ladies pulled up and started laughing. I caught the next light on purpose, put my car in park, got out, grabbed two vegetarian starter guides from the trunk and ran to their car. By now they were leaning back with their mouths wide open and a very scared look in their eyes. I handed them the guides and told them if they knew the truth, they wouldn't be laughing. A month later, I was at the local college teaching humane education to a summer camp group. When I handed out materials to take home, one little girl shouted, 'Hey, my sister has one of these. Some crazy lady jumped out of her car and ran back to give her one because she was laughing at her.'

'Oh really?' I asked."

That's our girl. Rebecca will receive a cruelty-free Spa Box from Vegan Unlimited
