A huge part of compassionate living involves the way in which we interact with those around us, most notably the people closest to home. We want to hear what you have to think about these complicated issues we all struggle with.
While many people consider diet to be purely a personal choice, others wouldn't dream of offering their children the option to eat meat. Should kids have the freedom to choose?

According to the Los Angeles Times, a group of roughly 10,000 vegetarian monks are rallying against Thailands Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra. The Buddhist sect is protesting his emphasis on capitalism, which has ushered in free-trade negotiations, consumerism, and other Western political practices.
The Pueblo Chieftain has published a superb article about the controversy over milk. The article details arguments from Harvard and Cornell researchers against consumption of this sacred cow of the American diet.
The organization, Animals Australia, has released undercover footage of a Bahrain slaughterhouse so shocking that Australia has ceased sending live cattle to Egypt. The operation exposed cruelty in five Arab countries, including Kuwait, Oman, Egypt, Bahrain and Qatar. This situation is all the more controversial because in Islamic countries, halal standards dictate stringent conditions by which food animals are slaughtered. Read the full scoop at Gulf Daily News.
The illustrious Dreena Burton has joined VegNews' roster of food writers with her new column, Simple Meals. To celebrate, we've decided to share this recipe from her cookbook, Vive le Vegan! (Arsenal Pulp Press)

1/4 cup unsweetened shredded coconut
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons unrefined sugar
1 to 1-1/2 teaspoon lime zest
1/4 teaspoon sea salt
1-1/4 cup unbleached all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/3 cup pure maple syrup
2-1/2 tablespoons freshly squeezed lime juice
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon coconut extract
1/4 cup canola oil
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a bowl, combine the coconut, sugar, lime zest, and salt, and sift in the flour, baking powder and baking soda. Stir until well combined. In a separate bowl, combine the maple syrup with the lime juice, vanilla, coconut extract, and canola oil, and stir well until mixed. Add the wet mixture to the dry, and gently fold and stir through until just well combined (do not overmix). Place large spoonfuls of batter on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and flatten slightly. Bake for 11 minutes until lightly golden (if you bake for much longer, they will dry out). Let cool for no more than 1 minute on the sheet (to prevent drying), then remove with a large spatula and transfer to cooling rack. Makes 10-12 medium to large co okies.

If you havent yet heard about holistic health, you have surely been living under a rock for the past years. Or, perhaps you have been buried under a pile of medications. Before you pop another Ibuprofen, look to herbal remedies for your ails.
Not only does garlic jazz up just about any savory dish, it also works as an antibiotic and can ease hypertension.
A derivative of wild yam root, DHEA lends energy and increases a sense of well being.
You can ingest bitters from plants such as dandelion root to aid digestion next time you indulge in one too many Tofutti Cuties.

Salon.com advice columnist Cary Tennis recently published a response to a letter entitled "I'm so vegan it hurts." The author, who has abstained from meat for fourteen years and all animal products for five, claims that "I am finding it harder and harder to function in the world where animals are slaughtered and consumed," citing an inability to date meat-eaters or even to walk down certain aisles of the grocery store.
Tennis advises that the writer find what's causing this imbalance in his or her life, in that only through conquering ones own inner forces can people hope to change the world. You can read Tennis' reply, along with 150+ retorts, here.
