V in the News

Donald Watson Passes Away at 95
VegNews founder Joseph Connelly made the following announcement on Thursday, November 17:

"It is with great sadness that I convey that Donald Watson, who coined the word 'vegan' and founded the world's first vegan organization in 1944 -- aptly named The Vegan Society -- has died. Watson passed away on Wednesday evening at his north England home after a brief illness. He was 95. Funeral arrangements are still being arranged. The Watson Family requests privacy while details are sorted out. More information will be posted as it becomes available."

On behalf of the entire VegNews team, we are deeply grateful for the contributions Donald made to the vegan movement. He was a hero in our eyes, and one we won't forget. If you missed the insightful interview with this veg pioneer, be sure to pick up a copy of our September/October 2005 issue.

Bird Flu
A cartoon chicken with a thermometer in his mouth and an ice pack on his head graced the November 14 cover of The New Yorker. The cartoon symbolizes the way the bird flu has become a topic of global attention. President Bush made front page news when he announced that a flu pandemic could kill millions. In late October, $2 billion in government funding went to Tamilfu, a flu vaccine manufactured by a company named Roche. Gilead Sciences Inc., a corporation for which Donald Rumsfield acts as chairman, developed the vaccine and gave Roche exclusive rights to sell it. reported that Gilead’s chunk of the royalties will exceed $1 billion as a result of this partnership.

Your Word
Opinions about vegan ethics are as wide and manifold as recipes for tofu scramble. This diverse range of attitudes towards edgy topics accounts for the dynamic proliferation of ideas about them. We want to hear from you.

Lab-raised meat has surfaced on the horizon of cutting edge of science. The harvesting of cloned cells in laboratories could potentially replace the raising and slaughter of billions of animals. While some are calling this technology a godsend, others have more cynical attitudes.

What do you think about lab-grown meat?

Recipe: Ginger Snaps

As the weather turns cold, our bodies crave warm foods and surroundings. Brew a cup of tea and bake a batch of these delicious ginger cookies... you'll be glad you did.

1 cup rice flour
1 cup tapioca flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon powdered ginger
1/2 teaspoon Herbamare seasoning
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup oil or non-dairy margarine
1/2 cup brown rice syrup
1/2 cup shredded coconut

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Mix the dry ingredients well. In a separate bowl, cream the margarine and brown rice syrup together, and add to the dry ingredients. Mix in the shredded coconut. Spoon onto a nonstick cookie sheet, and bake for 10 to 15 minutes.

This no-fuss recipe comes from Vegetarian Cooking for People with Allergies by Raphael Rettner, D.C., published by Book Publishing Company.

Adopt A Turkey

Farm Sanctuary offers a fantastic alternative to the celebration of these classic birds. Why eat a turkey when you can adopt one?

Farm Sanctuary has sponsored their Adopt A Turkey project since 1986, and since then thousands of people have aided turkeys, such as Willow, right, through this unique program. Rescued turkeys are taken to a Farm Sanctuary site in Watkins Glen, New York or Orland, California, where they live out the remainder of their lives in peaceful surroundings.

If your dinner table simply doesn't seem complete without a meaty imitation, try a number of the faux alternatives out there, including Now & Zen's Unturkey, Tofurky and Field Roast. Also, find more ideas for a cruelty-free celebration at GentleThanksgiving.org

Dodge Allergens with Natural Feast Pies

The market for allergen-free foods is hotter than ever. With more than 120 million people allergic to one or more of the eight major allergins (peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, milk, eggs, fish and shellfish), companies are stepping up to the plate and offering delicious products free of these ingredients. Many of the these products also happen to be vegan.

Natural Feast, one such company, offers tasty holiday pies including apple-cranberry, blueberry, and pumpkin. They also make dairy-free pie shells. Their products contain no refined sugar, wheat, gluten, or additives, but you wouldn't guess from taking a bite into these sweet mamas. If you can't find them at a local retail store, order online.

Veg Stars Hit the Big Screen

Sexy vegetarian Joaquin Phoenix delivers an uncanny, compelling performance as Johnny Cash in Walk the Line, opposite Reese Witherspoon, who has also publicly announced herself a vegetarian. This biopic tribute will please old-school Cash fans with its authenticity. Both actors actually sang for the movie, with Witherspoon playing Cash's wife, June Carter. The film focuses on the relationship between these musical icons, whose sizzling chemistry will appeal to younger viewers. Walk the Line hit theaters November 18.

Woody Harrelson, the cover interview of our November/December issue, plays Bill White, the real-life attorney for Josey Aimes (Charlize Theron) in North Country. Inspired by the history-making 1984 lawsuit, this film tells the story of a lower-class worker who struggles against sexual harrassment in the Minnesota mines.

Longtime veggie Richard Gere stars in Bee Season, based on the novel by Myla Goldberg. Gere plays a father who clings to his daughter’s talent for spelling. In a movie about words, Gere credits “…the unspoken word, the secrets, the quiet pains and dysfunctions” as lending the film its poignancy. This movie also stars Chocolat lead Juliette Binoche, who plays the spelling whiz's obsessive compulsive mother. Bee Season released November 11.
