Survey Question of the Month:

Is it OK to show a little skin for the cause?

Some organizations have received bad press over the years for using sex to make people think twice about eating meat or otherwise exploiting animals. This tactic has given them a good amount of ink in the media. While some think this strategy is wrong no matter what the outcome, others subscribe to the philosophy that whatever works, works. We want to hear from YOU.

Send your answers, along with your name, phone number, and hometown, to survey@vegnews.com. Please limit your answer to 50 words or less. Your answers may be used in a future issue of VegNews Magazine.

News Snips: All the Latest Veggie Buzz

We Can't Stop Blushing
You know you've made the big time when fashion mags on the other side of the world compare you to People Magazine. The Italian edition of ELLE listed VegNews as one of its "33 Pleasures of the Summer," citing our Vegan Wedding issue and annual Veggie Awards as must-reads. And Utne Magazine included us in their September/October issue. "VegNews ... started five years ago as a black-and-white paper and has grown into a substantial, colorful bimonthly covering topics from genetically modified food and organics labeling to vegan weddings." Aw, shucks.

News of the Weird
We're all about promoting the cause in a positive light. But sometimes, something happens that's so crazy, we just have to cover it. Speaking of covering, or shall we say not covering, the New York Post reported on August 29th that Quintessence restaurant owner David Hoyt has allegedly been flashing women on the subway. After victim Tao Nguyen, 22, captured his image on her camera phone, the Post put his picture on the front page. Nearly two dozen people phoned in to identify him as none other than the successful raw food eatery owner.

The Art of Healthy School Foods
The New York Coalition for Healthy School Lunches will host its autumn fundraiser at the Art Studio of Peter Max on Tuesday, October 11, from 6:30 to 9 pm. The organization will honor New York State Senator Kenneth P. LaValle and Assemblyman Felix W. Ortiz. Celebrities scheduled to attend include William (Billy) Baldwin, Chynna Phillips, Hallie Kate Eisenberg, and the lovely Nellie McKay. Tickets are $100 each, which includes specialties from Manhattan’s finest veg restaurants, organic wine and champagne, and a silent auction. Contact Amie at amie@healthylunches.org if you’d like to find out more, or call 631-286-8720.

Boom in Veggie Food Market
Mintel put together a report in July that assessed the growing demand for meat, dairy and other foods of the quote-unquote variety. Who knew five years ago that "mozzarela cheese" and "sausage" would take the market by storm? $1.2 billion worth of these goods were sold in 2005, amounting to a 64% increase since 2000. Mintel predicted that the market will gross $1.7 billion by 2010. Foods researched include non-dairy milks, meat substitutes, veggie burgers, veggie hot dogs, frozen entrées and egg substitutes. Looks like vegetarianism is movin' on up.

The Importance of Organic Chocolate

Did you know that most chocolate consumed in the U.S. today was at least partially culled from West African farms that subject their workers to slave-like conditions? Unfortunately, "vegan" and "ethical" do not always mean the same thing. To make sure you aren't supporting this practice, buy organic chocolate, as these West African farms don't have the OG stamp and therefore won't end up in chocolate that carries it. Find out more from Equal Exchange at equalexchange.com.

Speaking of chocolate, the VegNews' staff loves Terra Nostra's new dark chocolate flavors, which includes Dark Truffle, Dark Chocolate with Raisins and Pecans, and Intense Dark Chocolate. Also, don't miss out on their Rice Milk Bars. You can order these at veganessentials.com.

Recipe: Vegan Rice Krispy Treats

Who didn't get their hearts broken when Vegan Supreme Marshmallows went out of business, following confirmed lab results that Emes Kosher Gel, the supposedly non-gelatin substitute, contained animal matter? A collective sigh resounded through the veg community. Tiny Trapeze Confections, another producer of marshmallows that contain Emes, has stuck to the mantra of "business as usual." Good thing there's Vegan Sweets Marshmallows, sold exclusively through Pangea Vegan Products. Like whipped cream, this product doesn't quite retain the rigid shape of the original, but the taste is right-on and it melds perfectly into crispy rice squares. Or you can use the bag to see how many marshmallows you can stuff into your mouth and still say "Fluffy Bunny."

Our staff tested this recipe, courtesy of VeganSweets, and they turned out delicious. Add some melted chocolate on top for an extra special treat.

5 cups crisped rice cereal
1 bag VeganSweets Marshmallows
6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) Non-Dairy Margarine***

1. Melt margarine in large non-stick saucepan over VERY low heat. Add marshmallows, stirring constantly until gooey and melted. (Using higher heat setting may result in burning. Have patience!)
2. Add crisped rice cereal. Stir until well-coated.
3. Immediately press evenly into 9" pan coated with cooking spray.
4. Allow to cool and cut into squares.
5. Enjoy!

***Do NOT use low-fat margarine substitutes or tub margarine for this recipe!

Artist Spotlight: Gale Hart

A tenuous line separates activism that relies on shock tactics and that which employs just the right amount of provocation. Gale Hart walks this tight rope expertly with her new show, Why Not Eat Your Pet. She challenges viewers to question that mental separation of companion animals and those exploited for various purposes, ranging from food to fur to experimentation. Hart's work will appear at the 1212 Gallery in Sacramento from September 9—October 12, then at San Francisco's Varnish Gallery from November 1—December 3.

First-Ever Organic Athletes Conference

On Saturday, September 24, Sports Basement will sponsor the premiere OrganicAthlete Conference in San Francisco. With a mission of demonstrating how athletes can thrive on a plant-based diet, Bodybuilder Kenneth Williams, pro cyclist Christine Vardaros, and triathlete Brendan Brazier will top the roster. Dr. Doug Graham, Rozalind Gruben, Dr. Rick Dina, and Dr. Ruth Heidrich will speak about health and fitness, and cooking demonstrations and classes will spill the beans on how to prepare delicious foods without the use of animal products or other unhealthy ingredients. For more information, call 707-360-8511.

Moby Gets All Artsy

What do Leonardo Da Vinci and Moby have in common, besides their animal-lovin' ways? They're both Renaissance men. In addition to selling multi-platinum records, running a successful restaurant and publishing the Teany book, Moby likes to dabble in art. His limited edition prints, clothing and artwork will be showcased at 583 Art Factory in Stamford, CT starting October 20. Moby will sign special-edition shirts, with proceeds going to Friends of Animals.

Sky High Movie Review
by Johnathan Skinner

Sky High is no ordinary high school. It's a school where young super heroes go to learn to embrace their powers. If you thought high school was tough, just imagine it with super powered classmates such as Lash who has elastic arms and Speed who can run circles fast enough to create a vacuum.

Layla, played by the inspiring actress Danielle Panabaker, possesses the ability to grow plants at will. Her super power complements her good natured environmentalism. Even more impressive is the power of what she says when she first appears on screen: When offered a breakfast of bacon and eggs, she graciously declines and says, "You know how my mom can talk to animals? Well they said they don't like being eaten." So forward, right there on the big screen. The already gorgeous actress suddenly became even more stunning with the admittance that her character is vegetarian.

'Sky High' is a fun, well written, family oriented movie. Bringing in $14.6 million on its opening weekend at the box office, 'Sky High' has reached over a million people with its direct pro-vegetarian message making it a real super hero for the animals.
