V in the News

Looking at the Dinner Plate, Not the Car
Finally! The New York Times business section has caught on to the fact that environmentalism and food choice are related topics. In a recent story, The Times noted the efforts, and spending, of groups like The Humane Society of the United States, PETA, and Vegan Outreach, to emphasize the diet/global warming connection through ad and publicity campaigns. Despite scientific evidence, such as the UN report entitled "Livestock's Long Shadow" that explains how meat production and consumption contribute more to global warming than all the world's automobiles, there are still environmental groups who are not taking action to get the mindset of consumers out of the garage and into the kitchen. Following the model set forth by Al Gore when his documentary An Inconvenient Truth failed to mention going vegetarian as a means of environmental activism, The Sierra Club, as noted in The Times' piece, is wary of "lecturing" the public about their personal choices.

Looks Like a Buy Out
Speaking of choice, the one between shopping at Whole Foods or Wild Oats has been made for you. After an attempted block by the Federal Trade Commission, the US Court of Appeals has approved the acquisition of natural-food store chain Wild Oats by competitor and mega-retailer Whole Foods Market. The FTC argued that the merger would drive up prices and reduce competition, but US District Judge Paul L. Friedman overruled the appeal, citing that chain supermarkets such as Safeway and Kroger are now offering a wider variety of fresh produce and health food products and therefore consumers will still have adequate choice.

Lookism at its Funnest
Yes, we here at VegNews know that "funnest" is not a word. But we were at a loss for an actual word to properly express the sentiment that the following knowledge leaves us with: Donny Osmond has a new TV show on BBC2 called "Identity" where contestants try to guess which person fits into a certain social movement or stereotype. And who are the big stumpers? That's right, the vegans. Hey, guess what?! We don't all look the same! While this will almost certainly come as shocking news to someone—probably someone who has lived in a meat-eating cave for the last 30 years—many of us savvier vegans are already aware that there isn't one look that defines us. Three cheers for diversity!

Lookism at its Cutest
We may be a society that focuses way too much on the physical appearance of others, but if you're a parent of the if-you-can't-beat-'em-join-'em persuasion, then PETA has a new contest designed specifically for you. The first-ever World's Cutest Vegetarian Kid Contest will name one boy and one girl as the cutest vegetarian kids. Parents, grandparents, or anyone who knows a great veg kid and can send in a photo can nominate their little vegans. Veg kids, PETA claims, are cuter than their omnivorous cohorts because they are healthier and less prone to obesity.

Veggie Event Spotlights

Farm Sanctuary Gala for Farm Animals
It's time to break out the monkey suits and fancy gowns, as Farm Sanctuary's Gala 2007 is here! On Saturday, September 8, the glamorous and historic Beverly Hills Hotel in Los Angeles houses the glitzy event which will feature a farm animal-inspired silent auction and performance by Yes frontman Jon Anderson and School of Rock. VN's July+August covergirl Emily Deschanel will host the scintillating evening.

World Veg Festival Weekend
This yearly event kicks off on September 29 & 30. Organized by the San Francisco Vegetarian Society and the California-based animal rights group In Defense of Animals, this year's line-up promises to be one of the best yet. The star-studded event will feature the entertainment likes of VN columinst and super funny guy Dan Piraro, and lectures by Michael Greger, MD, who was recently featured as one of VN's 25 Most Fascinating Vegetarians, and the Mad Cowboy and VN advisor himself, Howard Lyman. You want food demos? They've got 'em, from the heavenly healthy to the devilishly decadent. With an eco-fashion show, children's corner, and much more, it's clear why this event takes two days! Kudos to Joseph!
Break out your finest vegan bio-dynamic Champagne: it's time to celebrate one of our own. VN publisher Joseph Connelly was honored on August 25 at The Animal Acres Gala with a Vegetarian Vision Award for his lifetime of dedication to vegetarianism and animal rights. The black-tie affair was chaired by actress Jorja Fox and attended by some of Hollywood's finest. James Cromwell, Chevy Chase, Alec Baldwin, Alicia Silverstone, and Thora Birch were just a few of the thespians on the planning committee who produced the five-star bash complete with dinner, dancing, and desserts. Set in Animal Acres' rose garden, guests were able to mingle with some of the sanctuary's non-human animal inhabitants while rubbing elbows with the stars under the resplendent Los Angeles night sky. Actress Persia White, a longtime vegan, presented Joe with his award. Previous recipients of the Vegetarian Vision Award include Paul Wenner, founder of Gardenburger, and Rey Ortega, founder of Sun Flour Baking Company.

Recipe: Seven Vegetable Couscous

Farmers' markets are bursting this month with so many luscious vegetables that the only reasonable thing to do is consume them en masse. This Moroccan-inspired dish from VN columnist Robin Robertson takes full advantage of the veggie abundance, and the savory spices will help keep you warm as the first hint of chill creeps into the evening air.

What You Need:

2 tablespoons olive oil
2 carrots, cut into 1/4-inch slices
1 red bell pepper, seeded and cut into 1/4-inch dice
1 pound small zucchini, halved lengthwise, cut into 1/2-inch slices
1 bunch scallions, trimmed and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 pound plum tomatoes, chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon turmeric
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
4 cups water
One 16-ounce can chickpeas, drained and rinsed
1 cup fresh peas
1/4 cup minced parsley or cilantro
1 10-ounce box couscous (makes 4-1/2 cups)

What You Do:

1. Heat the oil in a large saucepan. Add the carrots and cook, covered, until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the red bell pepper, zucchini, scallions, and tomatoes, along with the salt, cinnamon, turmeric, and black pepper. Add the water and bring to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer until the vegetables are tender, about 20 minutes. Add the chickpeas, peas, and parsley or cilantro, and cook 10 minutes longer. Keep warm while you prepare the couscous.

2. Prepare the couscous according to the package directions. Mound the hot couscous onto a serving platter and surround with vegetables, using a slotted spoon. Taste broth to adjust the seasoning, adding more salt if necessary. Serve the broth on the side.

Product Review: MarvaLash Mascara (It's Vegan!)

Okay, so not everybody uses mascara. But all of us, even for those who don't slap on the old war paint every morning, can appreciate a punny title. In this arena, MarvaLash is a hands-down favorite. With its equally quippy slogan, "You won't believe your eyes," and serious lash-lengthening effect, MarvaLash is a great vegan beauty find. The double-ended wand has a dry side for prepping and separating lashes, while the wet side coats with vegan-formula mascara. Devotees of fuller lashes beware, MarvaLash gives a decidedly long, skinny look, as opposed to a thick fan of lashes.

In Memoriam: Nadia Smit

Nadia Harumi Smit
1981–2007

Smart, kind, funny, talented, compassionate—that’s a tall order to fill, but it’s what we look for in a VegNews intern, and what we got in Nadia Smit. As our first-ever editorial intern, Nadia landed the position because she filled all of our hopes and expectations, and even exceeded them in some areas. When it came to veganism, she knew the facts, and as an award-winning graduate of Southwestern College’s journalism program and a current enrollee at San Francisco State University’s accredited journalism school, she had the skills to make her mark and effectively spread the veg message. And did we mention she could cook a mean curry?
After her first internship semester was completed, Nadia renewed for another, spending a total of nine months with the VegNews gang, bonding with each of us in a special way. For the time she was here, we were like family, working, eating, and laughing together. This is why, when we received the news that she was killed in a car accident last week, we were overcome with an unparalleled sense of grief, sadness, and loss.

At her funeral in San Diego, attended by hundreds, including members of the VN staff, Publisher Joseph Connelly took the podium to speak from the heart and share his fond recollections of Nadia. “She was the only one who didn’t insult me,” he remembered with a smile, prompting laughter from the assembled. Those who knew Nadia knew she liked everyone to be happy, to laugh, and to have fun. Nadia accepted everyone, and was truly liked by all. So, while VegNews mourns the death of this stylish and special young woman, and extends sympathy to her wonderful family, who did such an amazing job raising a considerate, kindhearted, and altruistic daughter, we pledge to honor her life with loving, happy memories.
Thank you, Nadia, for all that you gave to VegNews. You will not be forgotten.

September+October Cover Showdown Results
Cover Two Wins By a Landslide! In the August edition of the VegNewsletter, we asked you to chime in on your choice for our September+October fall fashion issue cover. Great minds must think alike. As most of you probably already know, our team picked Cover Two, with the gorgeous green tones and stunning, close-up model, as our choice for the first ever fall fashion issue. Even so, we had no idea how the votes would turn out since both covers were great. It came as something of a shock when the final numbers were tallied: Cover Two squelched Cover One, receiving 70 percent of the vote to Cover One's 30 percent. Thanks to all who took the time to vote, we love hearing from you!
