A bull escaped a slaughterhouse in the Sunset Park neighborhood of Brooklyn, NY this week, causing Twitter users to tweet “#BrooklynBull.” The animal—dubbed the “Brooklyn Bull”—was spotted traipsing Prospect Park around on Tuesday morning and led police on a chase around the park, gathering a crowd of onlookers both online and off, before he was tranquilized on a soccer field. Concerned Facebook users quickly notified New Jersey-based Skylands Animal Sanctuary and Rescue. “I’m trying,” the sanctuary’s social media moderator responded. “I’m on my way.” The terrified animal—now named “Shankar,” which signifies “the one who brings about happiness or prosperity” in Sanskrit—was quickly transported by trailer to the sanctuary where he will remain, safe from slaughter. Last year, Skylands Animal Sanctuary owner Mike Stura rescued Freddie—another runaway bull from a slaughterhouse in Queens—who continues to be a resident at Stura’s sanctuary.
