This Week's Must-Have

Italian Meat-Free Sausage

From taste to texture, Field Roast has creating meatless sausages down to a delicious science.

Zesty might be one way to describe Field Roast's Italian Sausages, but don't forget delicious, versatile, and incredibly filling. Eggplant, onions, garlic, red pepper, and fennel are finished with a splash of red wine and seasoned with a special blend of Italian spices. Paired with a wheat-meat base, these soy-free links are bursting with robust flavor enjoyed any way you like—on a whole-wheat bun, sautéed with bell pepper, and added to scrambles are just a few of our favorite ideas. VN staffers have been known to toss slices of these in their nightly kale salads. With a whopping 25 grams of protein and four grams of fiber per serving, our appetites as well as our taste buds are satisfied.

....at a whopping 250 calories per sausage, don't have 2 for dinner or you'll gradually gain weight!

These things are awesome! And half a day's worth of protein in each sausage. The Mexican Chipotle flavor is my favorite, but each variety is really good.

These are very good, but so high in calories and fat. Smartlight italian vege sausage is obsolutely delicious and 1/2 the calories. I made pasta with broccoli and vege sausage in an oil and garlic sauce and my meat eating friends did not know it was meatless.

a "whopping" 250 calories? seriously? if you eat one sausage with 1 cup of brown rice, which has 216 calories, that's 465. if you add in 1 cup of broccoli at 30 calories, that's 500 calories for dinner. if you eat 3 similar meals a day, that's 1500 a day! how do you gain weight eating that way?

Esme, she said,"don't have TWO for dinner." I must say these are the best fake sausages/hot dogs on the planet and have been eating these for years on a regular basis. Esme's point is well taken because I personally have attempted to eat just one on a roll (saurkraut, mustard, etc or with tomato sauce, peppers, onions) and find myself craving one more. So I make one more. After sauteeing the sausage in oil, adding the condiments and placing it on a roll and doing that over again, I easily consume 1,000 calories. Now what I do is eat one on a roll and one cut up and sauteed without a roll. Saves a couple hundred calories. Again, this is the best sausage and possibly the best meat substitute period. I'd like to see them make one that mimics a hot dog, i.e. size, shape, smell, etc. All the other hot dogs out there are rubbery and low fat.

Debbie, It's good fat, don't be scared. I like these for a couple reasons. First, they are soy-free, made from wheat gluten. Second, the company is owned by a cool guy (spoke to him a couple times by phone) who is nice and friendly. SmartFoods is owned by ConAgra - the largest cow/beef processor in the U.S. While I do buy some foods from large behemoth corporations, I try to support the smaller mom and pop operations.

I've had a lot of the field roast products and I have to say they are ALL fantastic. I was really skeptical at first, as I generally do not like faux meat products, but field roast is fantastic! They're sliced deli meat makes for the most delicious vegan sandwiches.

Regardless of calories, they are the only non soy vegan faux meat I know of. I too have used them for some time. My hope is they will come out with some faux chicken as well. for those vegans allergic to soy, it would be oh, so good.

We love Field Roast products. Just wish they weren't so expensive. And really wish they'd make a hot dog too. Also wish my local health food store had more variety of their products (and that they'd sell some of their commercial only products at retail). Since a vegan diet is typically lower in fat anyway, I wouldn't be too concerned with the fat content (as someone else pointed out it's good fat anyway). The body needs fat to be healthy...

I too am a major fan of the field roast products. They are very tasty, but as CB said a little on the pricey side. What the heck though, we're vegans and vegetarians, aren't we used to being ridiculously overcharged for our foods and various products? Lol. Just comes with the territory.
