Holiday Nog

Just can't wait for the season of nog to officially begin? Wait no longer!

By Ani Phyo

Okay, we know this recipe seems a little on the light side, but trust us: one sip of this splendid libation and you'll forget that the word "nog" was ever preceded by the word "egg." Want to know our extra-super-secret trick? This rich, creamy concoction is completely raw. That's right—everyone from your stodgy, meat-and-potatoes-eating Aunt Griselda to your astral-soul-vibrating cousin Sunbeam McMoonshine can swill to their heart's content and fill their glasses again and again. Serve this knock-out nog chilled, and make sure to have an extra batch or two on hand, just in case Aunt Griselda claims the punchbowl as her own personal mug.
Serves 4—6
What You Need:
  • 1 cup cashews
  • 1/2 cup dates, pitted
  • 1/2 vanilla bean, split and scraped, or 1/2 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon grated nutmeg
  • 3 cups water
What You Do:
  • In a blender, place all ingredients. Blend until smooth and serve.

This is really delightful and a great alternative to soy nog. I blogged about it here: http://laveganloca.blogspot.com/2008/12/raw-vegan-holiday-nog.html Thanks for the recipe!

I made this nog over the weekend - perhaps suffering from pumpkin spice soy nog withdrawls... i was dying for something noglike! i whipped this up, which takes no time in the vitamix. refrigerated it (well after taking a big swig!) and sipped on it that evening. Loved it! tasted very rich, creamy, and just sweet enough with the nutmeg and vanilla flavors mixed in! I just did a half batch b/c i knew husband would try it. Its not just like egg nog but a good substitute that i love! and extra points for how quick and easy it is too!!
