Meat-Free DC

The Washington, DC, City Council approves a citywide Meat-Free Mondays resolution endorsing veg foods.

By Liz Miller

On Tuesday, the Washington, DC City Council held a special press conference to announce its newly approved “DC Meat-Free Mondays” ceremonial resolution, encouraging Capitol city dwellers to reduce their meat consumption one day per week. The newly minted program makes Washington, DC the second US city to adopt a Meat-Free Mondays resolution, with San Francisco, Calif., having approved a similar measure last April. The presentation included information on the health benefits of integrating more fruits and vegetables into meals and challenged locals to ditch meat products on Mondays. DC-based animal rights group Compassion Over Killing applauded the City Council’s resolution, calling it a step towards encouraging healthier and compassionate food choices.

Awesome! let's hope this makes it to the White House, especially considering Michelle Obama's efforts to combat childhood obesity.

To the extent activists are concerned about promoting healthier eating and combatting obesity, they should lobby for a low carb Monday. Lean meats are an imperative for both a healthy diet and a healthy fat loss diet - and not simply b/c they possess superior amino profiled-proteins, moderate insulin, and control appetite. Want to make compassionate and eco-friendly food choices? Watch where you buy your meats, but don't reduce or eliminate them from your diet. The chief culprit of the American diet is processed foods laden with refined carbs, high fructose corn syrup, sodium, saturated fat, ect.

Alex- Interesting. I would love it if you could provide some evidence to back up that bold statement. A low carbohydrate diet will provide some short term weight loss but is certainly detrimental to overall health and longevity, unlike a vegetarian diet which when done right can fulfill all three categories. I suggest you read the China Study or Eat to Live as they are great resources for the understanding the benefits of a vegan diet.
