After a floundering 2015 revived in the latter part of the year by the addition of all-day breakfast, McDonald’s is looking to capitalize on a shift in consumer tastes with a new line of kale salads available in Canadian locations. Nearly one year after releasing its “Unapologetic Big Mac” advertisement—in which the company claimed it would “never be kale”—its new kale salad, named the “Keep Calm, Caesar On,” features a “nutrient-rich lettuce blend with baby kale, delicately topped with delicious crispy bacon, real parmesan petals, and roasted garlic focaccia croutons” with a choice of grilled or deep fried chicken breast and served with Pure Kraft Asiago Caesar dressing. All together, the offering has more fat and sodium than the restaurant’s double cheeseburger, Big Mac, Double Big Mac, Filet-O-Fish, Double Filet-O-Fish, Quarter Pounder with cheese, Quarter Pounder BLT, Bacon Egg and Cheese McGriddle, Mighty Angus burger, and Triple Thick Vanilla Milkshake. With packaging that boasts antioxidants and vitamins K and C and emblazoned with verbiage including “4 servings of vegetables never tasted so good!” and “Get your greens on with 8 varieties of lettuce,” the attempt at capturing a more health-conscious customer might work if the salad itself wasn’t so unhealthy.
