Boston-based company Nectar & Green hand-delivers glass bottles of organic, fresh-pressed almond milk to local subscribers every Tuesday in an effort to give milkman culture a cow-free spin. Founder Laurel McConville recently told news outlet The Boston Globe, “We’re like the milkman—the reinvented milkman.” McConville started the company in 2015 as a way to offer customers an alternative to preservative-laden almond milk found in grocery stores and focuses on creating small batches of her product every Monday night. Nectar & Green currently offers a fully vegan “pure” flavor made with just almonds and purified water. Plant-based subversions of animal product culture—such as the idea of “the milkman”—have also been similarly effective when it comes to butcher shop culture, as demonstrated by the popular Minneapolis-based vegan shop The Herbivorous Butcher.
