A recent feature published in tech-focused media outlet Gizmodo named eight foods that people will be consuming in 30 years. Writer Ryan F. Mandelbaum identifies animal agriculture as the primary culprit of greenhouse gas emissions, and points to several companies that are addressing the issue by developing innovative food products. Mandelbaum highlighted companies such as Memphis Meats and Mosa Meat, which are working to take animal-slaughter out of the equation in their production of meat grown from a few animal cells in a laboratory. The writer also predicted a move toward algae-based food ingredients, as the aquatic plants contain many nutritious proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. While Mendelbaum also unfortunately listed farmed fish as an alternative to wild caught, he pointed to “faux fish” company New Wave Foods—which recently mastered “pretty perfect” vegan shrimp—as innovators in the seafood industry that will have an impact on which foods people will be eating in 30 years.
