Fireworks, vegan spare ribs, and 90 degree heat—Happy Birthday, America! Yes, it’s officially almost time to revel in our revolutionary past, vegan style. If you’re planning a backyard cookout, consult our comprehensive Fourth of July feast for the very best recipes, including grilled veggie burgers, kabobs, and cheesy potato casserole. Can’t imagine the Fourth without a fantastic, sweeping fireworks display? Pack the perfect patriotic-themed picnic to indulge in under the stars. Just remember, if you’re going to spend Independence Day sunning outside, leave your companion animals indoors—while climbing temperatures and fireworks are fun for humans, they can be traumatic and dangerous for cats and pups. Once you’ve prepared a quiet space for Fido, bust out the cooler and get ready for the best Fourth of July ever.
Today, backyard barbecues and fireworks are as synonymous with Independence Day as our 1776 declaration of liberty, and rightly so. Simmering summer temperatures and hazy, starry evenings make July 4th the perfect time for grilling veggie dogs and burgers and relaxing underneath the night sky. Across the country, vegetarians of every stripe are stocking up their pantries with plant-based ingredients to prepare American classics such as lip-smacking Vegan Spare Ribs slathered in Savory Barbecue Sauce paired with tangy Zesty Potato Salad and BQQ Baked Beans. Once you’ve indulged in all the suppertime standards, bring out the dairy-free dessert tray stacked with Classic Apple Pie, Luscious Lime Cheesecake, and Homemade Strawberry Ice Cream. Don’t be afraid to go a little over the top with your Fourth of July feast; remember, this isn’t just any ordinary birthday celebration.

Here at the VNHQ we love putting vegan spins on holiday traditions, so when it comes to tackling Independence Day, lets just say we get a little crazy. For more than 100 years, hot dog eating contests have been scheduled to coincide with Fourth of July festivities; so, in honor of good old American gluttony, host a veggie dog eating contest! Keep it in the family and invite close friends and relatives, or plan a community-wide, cruelty-free competition. If you’re considering a more low-key fête—read: less gluttonous—plan a simple pre-firework display picnic at home where legal or in a local park or garden. Revelers can also shoot off fireworks from the comforts of home by hosting a vegan cookout complete with a dairy-free ice cream bar. Alternatively, if fireworks and fried food don’t sound appealing, consider spending the day at an animal sanctuary and spread some compassion to furry friends.

Vegan Chef Chloe Coscarellli knows a thing or two about veganizing holiday standards. Last February, she left the VN staff awestruck after preparing a delicious, lovely Valentine's Day feast at the VNHQ, complete with themed menu and decorations. We were blown away by this 22-year-old Natural Gourmet graduate’s skills, and on June 22, she took home the top prize on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars, beating out three non-vegan chefs. Now, in honor of Independence Day, Chef Chloe has created two tantalizing vegan treats especially for VN readers. These dairy-free confections are the perfect way to cap off any Fourth of July cookout: Seasonal Berry Cobbler with Vanilla Bean Whipped Crème and Chocolate-Dipped Ice Cream Sandwiches.
