Jennifer Travers & Barry Hartglass do everything differently. They knew their wedding was not going to be typical.
May 2, 2004
Garrison, New York
70 guests

Barry and I are an unusual couple, as we seem to do everything differently. After eight years together, we finally decided to get married. We knew our wedding was not going to be typical.
For our invitations, we decided against the traditional fancy calligraphy-style. Instead, Barry wrote and directed a 30-minute video (sent to guests on a DVD) where we talked about our wedding. Barrys sister, an accomplished performer, along with my brother, mocked fun at what guests might think about a vegan wedding. From the food to the tuxedos to the gifts, we wanted to let guests know in a humorous way that our special day would be cruelty-free. Friends and family still tell us how hysterical it was.
Finding a venue for our wedding was a challenge. We called many places where the most creative entrée was pasta primavera. That just wasnt going to do it for us. Then we found The Garrison. As soon as we entered the Upstate New York resort, we knew we had found the place. The chefs were supportive and excited to design their first exclusively vegan menu. The pastry chef met with us to create a fabulous vegan wedding cake. There was a beautiful on-site spa where I had my hair and makeup done with cruelty-free products. The Garrison even had yoga classes, which helped to soothe my nerves before the big day.
We were married outside, underneath a large canvas huppah on which Barry painted a modern, colorful landscape. Our family and friends were a part of the ceremony, and we drank organic wine and ate homemade vegan challah.
Speaking of friends and family, we are very fortunate to have such a wonderful and talented group around us. My brother was our DJ, my cousin videotaped the wedding, and Barrys friends and sister performed live music. At every setting was a place card designed by my father with a picture of us as children and as a couple. On the back of the cards were paintings done by my grandmother. Instead of wedding favors, Barry and I made a donation to EarthSave in honor of our guests. It worked out perfectly.
Our wedding day was a true expression of our relationship and beliefs, and, most importantly, we had a great time. We were especially pleased that our guests loved the vegan cuisine and will probably be talking about it for years to come.
